How to Pay at the Register
Konbini checkouts are fast once you know the routine. Staff will ask you a few standard questions — here is what each one means.
1. Hand over your items
Place items on the counter tray. Staff will scan them and announce the total (e.g. "sanbyaku en desu" = ¥300).
2. Answer the bag question
"Fukuro wa tsukaimasu ka?" or "Rejibukuro do shimasu?" means "Do you want a bag?" Bags cost ¥3-5. Say "hai, onegaishimasu" for yes, or "fukuro wa daijoubu desu" to decline.
3. Answer the heat question
"Atatakaku shimasu ka?" means "Shall I warm it up?" — common for bento and oden. "Hai, onegaishimasu" for yes, "daijoubu desu" to skip.
4. Pay
Cash, credit card, Suica/PASMO (tap the reader), or any major IC mobile payment (PayPay, Rakuten Pay). Self-checkout registers exist at many stores — the screen walks you through scanning and payment.
Tips
- The card reader terminal may ask "ikkai de yoroshii desu ka?" (charge in one payment?) — press the green button or say "hai".
- Receipts are offered with "ryōshūsho wa yoroshii desu ka?" — "daijoubu desu" skips it.
- If the register line is busy, stand behind the line marker on the floor, not at the register itself.
